What is Bone Graft?

Bone grafting is a regenerative procedure applied in patients who do not have adequate bone volume for implant treatment. Graft materials obtained from various sources are placed in the area of bone loss to stimulate new bone formation (osteogenesis).

After tooth loss, the jawbone naturally resorbs. Bone grafting compensates for this loss and provides the necessary volume and density for implants. Modern graft materials are biocompatible and accepted by the body, fusing with natural bone over time.

Treatment Stages

1

Bone Analysis

Existing bone volume, density, and extent of loss are evaluated with 3D tomography.

2

Graft Selection

The most suitable graft material (autogenous, allogenic, xenogenic, or synthetic) is determined according to the patient's condition.

3

Surgical Application

Graft material is placed in the bone defect under local anesthesia and covered with membrane.

4

Healing Period

During the 3-6 month healing period, graft material fuses with bone (osseointegration).

5

Implant Placement

After adequate bone is formed, implant surgery is performed.

Bone Graft Types

Autogenous Graft

Graft taken from patient's own bone. Gold standard, highest success rate. Can be taken from jaw, hip, or tibia.

Allogenic Graft

Processed bone obtained from human donors. No second surgery required, offers wide volume options.

Xenogenic Graft

Animal-derived (usually bovine) processed bone. Products like Bio-Oss are widely used.

Alloplastic Graft

Synthetically produced bone-like material. Contains components like hydroxyapatite, beta-tricalcium phosphate.

How Is It Done?

Bone grafting procedure is performed under local anesthesia in sterile conditions and usually takes 30-60 minutes.

Treatment area is anesthetized with local anesthesia
Gum flap is raised to expose the bone defect
Graft material is placed in the defect area and compacted
Graft is protected with barrier membrane (GBR technique)
Gum is closed and sutures are placed

Advantages

Provides adequate bone volume for implants
Stops and reverses bone loss
Preserves jawbone structure and facial aesthetics
Increases long-term implant success
Can be applied with minimally invasive techniques
Various graft options available
Possibility of fixed implants instead of dentures
Safe and proven method

Disadvantages

Additional surgical procedure and healing time required
Second surgical site needed for autogenous graft
Risk of graft failure (rare)
Extends total treatment time

Note: Most of these disadvantages can be minimized with proper planning and treatment by an experienced dentist.
