What is Cyst Operation?
Cyst operation is the surgical removal of fluid-filled sacs (cysts) formed in the jaw bones. Dental cysts usually form as a result of infected tooth roots, impacted teeth, or developmental anomalies and can cause bone destruction if left untreated.
Jaw cysts often grow painlessly and are detected during routine X-ray examinations. Early diagnosis and treatment minimize bone loss and ensure protection of adjacent teeth. With modern surgical techniques, cysts are safely removed and the resulting cavity can be filled with bone graft.
Treatment Stages
Diagnosis and Imaging
Cyst size, location, and relationship with adjacent structures are evaluated with panoramic X-ray and 3D tomography.
Surgical Planning
Decision is made for enucleation (complete removal) or marsupialization (drainage) based on cyst type.
Surgical Intervention
Cyst sac is completely removed under local anesthesia. Causative tooth, if any, is treated or extracted.
Cavity Treatment
Created cavity is cleaned, bone graft is placed if necessary.
Healing and Follow-up
Healing is monitored with regular check-ups. Pathology results are evaluated.
Cyst Operation Types
Radicular Cyst
Most common type. Forms at infected tooth root apex. Treated together with root canal treatment or tooth extraction.
Dentigerous Cyst
Cyst surrounding the crown of an impacted tooth. Usually seen around wisdom teeth.
Keratocyst (OKC)
Cyst with aggressive growth potential. Requires careful follow-up due to high recurrence risk.
Residual Cyst
Develops from cyst remnants left in the area of previously extracted tooth.
How Is It Done?
Cyst operation is performed under local anesthesia in sterile conditions. Procedure time varies from 30-90 minutes depending on cyst size.
