What is Internal Bleaching?
Internal bleaching (walking bleach) is a whitening procedure applied from inside the tooth for teeth that have darkened after root canal treatment. Bleaching agent placed in pulp chamber lightens color from inside out.
Root canal treated teeth can darken over time due to removal of pulp tissue and blood pigments seeping into dentin tubules. Internal bleaching is the most conservative method to restore these teeth to their natural color without requiring crowns or veneers.
Treatment Stages
Evaluation
Root canal treatment quality is checked, X-ray is taken.
Barrier Placement
Protective barrier is applied over canal filling.
Bleaching Agent Application
Sodium perborate or hydrogen peroxide is placed in pulp chamber.
Waiting
Wait 3-7 days, procedure is repeated if necessary.
Final Restoration
When desired color is achieved, permanent filling is placed.
